Nordic-powered LTE-M/NB-IoT development platform aids cellular IoT solution prototyping
- NBT’s Prometheus employs Nordic’s nRF9160 SiP to provide low-power cellular IoT wireless connectivity and GNSS
Oslo, January 10, 2022 – German venture studio Next Big Thing AG (NBT) has launched an IoT sensor-based development platform designed to simplify prototyping and speed time-to-market for developers of cellular IoT- and Cloud-based solutions. The platform supports development across a wide range of industrial applications including the manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and logistics sectors.
Superior computational capability
The ‘Prometheus’ development platform is powered by Nordic’s nRF9160 low power System-in-Package (SiP) with integrated LTE-M/NB-IoT modem and GNSS. The nRF9160 SiP’s 64MHz Arm® Cortex®-M33 dedicated application processor provides sufficient computational power to not only supervise the LTEM/NB-IoT modem’s cellular connectivity but also all other product functionality. The SiP’s 1MB Flash and 256kB RAM supports fast response and complex application software.
In addition to the Nordic SiP, the CE-certified development platform features a wide range of sensors and interfaces, a stable embedded software stack, fully encrypted communication, mesh connectivity for short-range communication, automatic switching between NB-IoT and LTE-M cellular IoT connectivity, and advanced provisioning tools. The solution is optimized for low power consumption and provides an industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C.
NBT’s IoT development platform comprises two main components: The hardware and embedded software platform (Prometheus); and the Cloud-based software platform (‘NBT Software Platform’). The standard configuration of Prometheus consists of a range of sensors, for example a temperature sensor (analog and digital), accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, air quality sensor, ambient light sensor, and humidity sensor. The extended version of Prometheus also includes Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® 5.2/Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) general purpose multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide support for Bluetooth LE connectivity, as well as USB, GPS, radar, an adjustable antenna tuner, and extended temperature range.
nRF Connect SDK support
The development platform supports Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK (Software Development Kit). The nRF Connect SDK incorporates Zephyr RTOS which greatly reduces issues arising from firmware bugs or unforeseen events associated with embedded development of constrained, energy-limited, and secure IoT products.
The nRF9160 is certified for global cellular IoT applications, comprising the dedicated application processor and memory, multimode LTE-M/NB-IoT modem with integrated RF Front End (RFFE), GNSS, and power management in a compact 10 by 16 by 1mm package. The Arm Cortex-M33 processor includes Arm TrustZone® for trusted execution and Arm CryptoCell™ 310 for application layer security. The nRF9160 is optimized for power consumption, it supports PSM and eDRX power-saving enabling it to sleep for longer periods of time, and offers up to 15 years of battery life depending on the specific application.
“Through intensive research and development, our team has conducted a number of analyses and tests which have indicated that cellular IoT is more reliable with a higher quality of service than alternative low-power wide-area networks [LPWANs],” says Jasmin Skenderi, CTO at Next Big Thing AG. “We selected Nordic’s nRF9160 for Prometheus based on the SiP’s proven quality and advantages including its powerful Arm Cortex-M33 processor with TrustZone.”
“In addition, one of the core benefits of interacting with Nordic was the DevZone support system which was extremely helpful in developing Prometheus. Any questions we had were answered rapidly which ensured there were no delays in our development pipeline.”
